It is interesting to see this site. I notice that the Overton Whistles "were designed more then 25 years ago". I would be interested to know the actual year they were first sold. My oldest two whistles (a 'c' and a low 'F') are at least 25 years old and appear to be early (even 'prototype') models, since they are unbranded (although obviously made by the same tooling and techniques as my later whistles, a 'd', a low 'G' and a low 'D').
These were bought in England by Graham Seal, while studying folklore at Leeds University and I bought them when he returned to Australia. I suspect that these may have been the first Overton Whistles seen in Australia ... certainly in Sydney. They attracted a lot of attention and led to a lot of orders, once I had price lists and address.

My name is Bob Bolton and I play (mostly) Australian traditional music, here in Australia. I have played whistles (as well as button accordion, mouthorgan and [subsequently] concertina and various homemade and improvised instruments) since around 1962. I made a number of metal whistles in an old smithy in Tasmania in 1965 - high 'G', high 'F', 'C' and low 'G' ... out of copper pipe, with wooden fipples. Some of these were made in reference to 'Hohner' all metal whistles, which I bought in 'C', 'Bb' and low 'G'.
I played most of the commercially available tinwhistles of those days - Clarke, Generation most commonly and I bought my first "Overton" whistles in 1978 from a frend who had been studying folklore at Leeds University and who bought early (prototype?) whistles from bernard in Rugby. These were a standard 'C' and a low 'F', both unbranded and rather "tighter" in design than new Overtons,b ut clearly made by Bernard (comparison of tooling marks &c shows the identical characteristics).
Since then I have bought a standard 'D', a standard 'C' and a low 'D' (picked up by my friend Margaret Walters, when in Britain for the folk festival season). These are all going well (although I lost my low 'F' at the Australian National Folk Festival last ear ... luckily it was handed in, identified by my personal markings and returned to me).
I had a young blike come a long to my Monday Night Workshop last week with a lovely new Low 'D' Overton bought from Colin in Germany. I has impressed by the finish and particularly the close spacing of the finger holes (I have short thick fingers). I was also impressed by the very nice whistle bags now suppied.
My first 2 had no bags and the later three have very flimsy black felt bags that fell apart rapidly. Many smaller whistles in my collection have acquired nice silk bags made for Asian flutes and whistles, but I can't find ones to suit the low 'F' and 'D' Overtons.
I was wondering about whether you would consider supplying 'after-market' whistle bags .. or whether you would be cautious about this in the light of your product identification procedures. I imagine that the cost of getting them to Australia would be high ... but they ARE nice bags! In extremis, I can probably have some sort of better soft bag made up by a competent machinist, but I feel it is worth asking about your product.

I bought my Overton Low D in about 1990 in Dark Gate, Edinburgh and at first couldn't get a note out of it. Where were the instructions?! Just after that I heard Davy Spillane play one at the Arran Folk Festival. Suitably inspired - I practised - a lot - and since then I suppose every day in every way I've got better and better - but I know I'll never be that good. Northumbrian bagpipe tunes sound especially good on the Low D although I've heard no commercial recordings of this combination. Anyway, to the point -congratulations on a fine instrument, may you long continue!

Mir würde noch ein Bereich speziell der Anfertigungs Möglichkeiten der Whistles gefallen ( welche Klanglichen Möglichkeiten es gibt, was smal Bore und Big Bore für Unterschiede bedeuten usw. ). Praktisch was der Anfänger wissen will.
Macht weiter so und ich freue mich schon auf die Whistle Music Examples ?!? ;-)

I have been interested in whistles and especially since hearing Roger Whitaker albums. I do plan to buy one or two. I want to hear a sample of your wistles when you add to this site in the future. The Mexican and Irish Whitler songs are among my favorites as are many of the other Irish whistle songs. I also purchased a Kena flute from the Andes and am learning to play it as well.

Hi, I love the Low D whistle, I've used it on a few of my CDs, and a lot of sessions over the years, in California. I bought it in a shop in London back in 97 or 98 on a tour with Long John Baldry. I can't seem to find any markings on it, where should I look? I used this one on a cut on my mozart CD, Mozart Rhythm and Romance, on a track called "Memory in the Mist", based on Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, with Ullian Pipes, and a few other whistle. Die Low D ist nun endlich da. Auch wenn ich noch ein bisschen den Fingerspagat für das untere Tonloch üben muß, bin ich trotzdem sehr zufrieden. Es ist nur schade das es mit der Eloxierung nicht klappen wollte. Aber Egal. Vielleicht bei der nächsten Whistle.

Hello! I just recieved my first Overton Low Whistle in the Key of D and it is awesome! I have been playing a Chieftain for many years but wanted the best. I ordered my Overton about a year and a half ago from Lewis Crownover from Sound of Harvest. As soon as I first played my Overton I felt an instant connection with the instrument. I can feel the vibrations in my fingertips as the wind passes through the pipe. The sound and tone are clear and crisp. I also noted that it takes less air to produce clean steady sound. The chieftain is sloppy and requires a lot more air and sounds shaky while holding a note.Perhaps I can sell my Chieftain. Please put me on your email list. i havce a question for you. my mother has a old avon wistle and she can't find it in any avon books.we have asked many avon workers that are in our town but none have seen such a thing in any of their avon books. it does have "avon" carved on it and has a floers also carved on it. if theres any chance that you can help me please e-mail me at raven571(at)aol.com. oh,i also have tried to look on websites but no luck yet but i will keep trying.thank you for your time,sincerly rachelle.
